“The band has always had a knack for prog-like arrangements, and here they explore them more fully. There’s an epic quality to the songs, with riffs that twist and turn yet manage to hit the right notes at the right times. And in spite of the more melodic vocals and lessened distortion, “” isn’t Top 40 ready at all. In fact, it’s just as complicated as before ‘ just takes a different approach, one that’s more classic metal-oriented. Think Iron Maiden as interpreted by Today Is the Day. As the band’s often compared to Mastodon (for good reason ‘ some of ‘ snake-like riffs are very reminiscent), you could say “” is their “Leviathan”. While it’s definitely a bit of a creative gambit, it’s by no means a failure. What at first seems like a from-left-field change ultimately turns out to be more of a natural evolution.”
