” is not the type of band to suddenly change course. There are not many bands with such a recognizable sound as these German flag-bearers of traditional stoner / desert rock.
Three man in a new studio with authentic 2 inch multitrack tape recorders. That can only result in a record that sounds as if it was not recorded last year, but forty years ago. has turned its eleventh album into a timelessly old-fashioned record that is immediately recognizable as but steers away from being an easy follow up to “She Said”.”
“There are only five songs on “”. One short and four long or even very long songs are on it. Almost every one of them could be the archetypical song, with the characteristic open guitar sound of Stefan Koglek, his drawling style of singing and the powerful, solid rhythm section of bass player Philipp Rasthofer and drummer Manfred Merwald ‘ inconspicuous but indispensable. The shortest song “Paradise” is in fact not much different than the six minutes longer tracks that can be heard before and after it. The only difference is the cautious, deliberate buildup that can be heard in “Circles” and “‘berall”, needing more than three minutes (the total length of “Paradise”) to get going. The closing title track also follows familiar paths with its heavy eastern influences.”
“All in all “” is a fine album, but the feeling remains we have heard all of this many times before: d’j’ entendu. But then again, is not the type of band to suddenly change course. There are not many bands with such a recognizable sound as these German flag-bearers of traditional stoner / desert rock.”
