“Space, the final frontier. Welcome on board of the spaceship . We will soon be leaving for our second voyage and this time we will go further and faster than on our maiden flight so please keep to your seat until the “fasten seatbelts lights” are out.”
“The new album by Dutch stonerband reminds of memorable spacerock moments. The time when Pink Floyd was plotting a course straight into the sun, directed by Syd Barrett. ‘s “” reminds of those moments. But is a stonerrock band first and foremost. One that likes carefully spun out jams, structured pieces of noise that will bring even the most sober listener into a higher orbit. Last year’s debut album was first self-released, “” on the other hand is brought to us by the Elektrohasch record label. Elektrohasch is best known as the label owned by Colour Haze, a band with whom shares a lot of things. Like a fondness for jamming and of course the desertrock / Kyuss worshipping that is almost a given in this genre.”
“Just as Colour Haze, is not afraid to put the pedal to the metal. “” has moments where things are beautifully gritty and wild. But the real strength of is its subtleness and the way the songs are layered. Often the base is very minimalistic and it is only slowly that the band works towards a climax. “Behind” is the pivotal number on this album, the song that combines all elements. A slow and careful start builds up to a state of weightlessness and maximum speed that is reached after ten minutes. Similar psychedelic heights are touched in the following titletrack that combines a straight forward rock part with a long, more experimental piece in which there is ample room for effect and atmosphere. Finishing track “34 & More…” is very much like Jimi Hendrix in his Electric Ladyland period because of the applause mixed through the track and the general laziness of the song. When the record finishes, “” turns out to be a very successful mix of roughness and quiet, improvisation and introspection, experiment and ecstasy. “” is one of this year’s better stonerrock albums and also one of the best Dutch albums of 2011.”
