Although most tend to lump them in with the ultra heavy doom crowd, they bring a lot more than just rehashed Sabbath riffs to the table. They lean just as heavily towards early proto-black metal pioneers like Celtic Frost and Venom. Their aggressive riffs, upbeat tempos, and seering solos are counterbalanced by cutting, abrasive tones and layered textures. But what really sets them apart is their use of dark, haunting melodies. The production is once again stellar; the bass is deep and rumbling with just enough distortion to make it thick, but still retain clarity. The drums pound in tribal war rhythms that would make Des Kensel and Dale Crover proud, and the tense, screamed vocals are set just right in the mix. Those who have enjoyed their previous albums are going to be stoked that they’ve kept with the same premise, but brought in enough new ideas and sounds with this album to still keep it fresh. For fans of bizarre occult rituals and cryptic transmissions from distant and long dead star systems.
